Piloxing: A Fun Way to Workout

If you love hybrid words, you'll love "Piloxing." And no, it doesn't involve punching your cat, whilst doing the dreaded Pilates Hundred... thankfully!

It's a fun combination of Pilates and Boxing, created by Swedish celebrity trainer, Viveca Jensen. This is Jensen's way of physically and mentally empowering people through fitness.

Piloxing is mainly designated for woman (sorry guys!), and it provides an interesting blend of speed, agility, sculpting and flexibility.

The exercise also incorporates the use of one-pound weighted gloves, which add some intensity to your workout by toning arms, and boosting cardiovascular health.

Check out a Piloxing class in action below:

I think this looks like a great workout. And, if you enjoy Pilates, but get bored sometimes, this is a great way to ramp up your normal routine.

What do you think -- would this style of workout interest you?

World's Fattest Woman's Race Against Time

Ohio_Terri.jpg

At 700lbs, 49-year-old Terri Smith finds herself in an urgent situation. In need of an MRI for her brain, she is unable to move, stand or roll on her own.

To make matters worse, even if she does manage to escape the confines of her Ohio home, she is far too big to fit in an MRI machine. They even considered using the MRI at the Cleveland Zoo, but the zoo doesn't have the appropriate accreditation to conduct MRI's on humans.

Terri's husband and daughter do everything for her from feeding, bathing and dressing her in bed. Says Smith,

My husband is my guardian angel. He's stuck by me through everything. Most men would have left a long time ago, and who could blame them -- but Myron is a living saint.

Bed-ridden for the past 3 years, Terri has been heavy all of her life. Says Terri of her weight,

It's awful how it creeps up on you. Once you cannot exercise it doesn't matter how healthily you eat, the weight just sticks. You're not burning off a single calorie.

Hmmmmm......

If I were to be completely honest, I sometimes have a high tolerance for other peoples' pain. I really do hope Terri gets the help she needs to give herself a chance to live. This is a sad, sad situation. However, it is also a largely preventable one.

And husband and daughter do sound like saints, but are they more enablers?

Weight certainly can creep up on people, but restricting calories works, and it works very well. The expenditure side of the ledger matters very little at this point until Smith can achieve some ambulation, and even then it will be a minimal contributor.

I wish her all the best and hope we can read a story of triumph in the next year or so.

What are your thoughts on this situation?

Lean Belly Prescription

Lean Belly Prescription

The Lean Belly Prescription is a new book from Dr Travis Stork (M. D.). The urgent-care physician is focusing on visceral fat - adipose tissue that surrounds internal organs. A large amount of research has shown that belly fat carries more health risks than fat stored elsewhere - such as hips or thighs.

You know you have visceral fat if your gut is round and firm, your waist is bigger than your hips, or your Wranglers have a waist size of 40 or higher for men, and 35 or higher for women.
The essence of the book is a series of small tips or insights to bring about healthy weight loss. Stork suggests tackling 3 of these at a time, to have an increased chance of success. He appears to have chosen the number 3 due to a study from the Baylor College of Medicine:
One group of adults took on three simultaneous health goals, while a second group attempted a single goal. Eighteen months later, those who had embraced multiple healthy changes were 20 percent more likely to have stuck with them. (from MensHealth)

Here is a sampling of suggested changes:

If you love pasta and rice: Simply switch all your refined carbs to whole-grain versions, and lose up to eight pounds in four weeks! If you love soda: Learn how to swap out 450 wasted calories with drinks that are even more delicious, and to lose up to four pounds in four weeks! If you love to graze: Nosh all day long on your favorite fruits and vegetables and lose up to six pounds in four weeks! If you love breakfast: Build yours around these simple lean protein/good carb principles and lose up to four pounds in four weeks! If you love to snack: Learn how to combine food groups to build snacks, and lose up to seven pounds in four weeks!

The book includes 4 weeks of meal plans and a basic workout plan. To be frank, in this information age we live in, much of this information can be gleaned fairly easily online (and, possibly even entirely from within Diet Blog - here's 30+ useful tips to begin with). Good on Travis Stork for addressing the issue of visceral fat, but there seems to be little new on the offer here.

If the name rings a bell - it's because Stork appeared on the Bachelor, and was host of daytime talk show The Doctors (which for some reason seems to qualify people to write diet books).

The Lean Belly Prescription: The Fast and Foolproof Diet & Weight-Loss Plan From America's Top Urgent-Care Doctor by Travis Stork. Available at Amazon (around $14).

The Imagination Diet: Could It Work for You?

Feel like eating chocolate? Some scientists reckon that by imagining tucking into your favorite candy bar, you can reduce the amount you end up eating.

A small-scale study carried out at Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania, found that people who repeatedly imagined eating a food ended up eating less of it.

If you've ever had the experience, though, of being unable to stop thinking about cookies - until you eventually crack and eat one - you might well question how accurate the scientist's findings are.

The study was very small, involving just 51 people, and was published in Science Magazine. Participants were divided into four groups:

One group repeatedly imagined eating a food (the study used M&Ms and cubes of cheese)Another group imagined it a few timesA third group imagined eating a different foodThe final group didn't imagine eating anything

The study's authors wrote that the first group "subsequently consumed less of the imagined food" than the others, and added:

They did so because they desired to eat it less, not because they considered it less palatable. These results suggest that mental representation alone can engender habituation to a stimulus.

In plain English, that means that imagining can make us get used to something. You've probably noticed that the first couple of bites of your favorite food are usually the best, that's because you quickly become "habituated" to it.

The scientists believe that by imagining that we're eating a food, we get that same sense of being used to it, so we end up being satisfied with less.

Crackpot research, or new enlightenment?

Well, I don't think imagination is ever going to be as effective as a healthy diet combined with exercise. But, if you want to control how much you eat this Christmas, it just might be worth a try.

And if you give it a go, let us know how you get on in the comments below...

Total Obese Americans to Reach 42%

FHOMER.jpg

It's not the bubonic plague and you get it from cheeseburgers, not blood thirsty rats, but the United States is double-chin deep in an obesity epidemic.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity has grown dramatically over the past 20 years. Only Colorado and the District of Columbia have an obesity rate less than 20%.

But now researchers say total obesity in the U.S. will reach 42%.

Published in the Public Library of Science journal PLoS Computational Biology, scientists predict the number of obese people in the United States to "top out" at 42% over the next 40 years. Up 8% from a 2007 prediction of 34%.

Obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30.

For the study, a mathematical model was applied to four decades of data obtained from the Framingham study; a long term study examining the health and habits of nearly an entire town in Massachusetts.

Data also found an association between obesity and the friends you keep. The researchers say an American has an additional 0.5% chance of becoming obese with each obese social contact, i.e. friend, they make per year.

The severity of obesity in the U.S. varies from state to state. CDC data shows southern states tend to be the fattest.

CDCOB.JPG

Obesity takes a toll on the economy too. CDC data puts the total cost of obesity-related healthcare expenditures at $92.6 billion. Wow, that would buy a lot of burgers and fries...with a diet Coke of course.

Poll: Does Biggest Loser Equal Biggest Diet Expert?

biggest-loser-patrick-house.jpg
The newest "Biggest Loser" was just announced on NBC last night and in case you missed it, Patrick House took the prize.

No one would argue that his 181 pound weight loss was astounding, but does winning Biggest Loser make one a dieting expert?

I caught Patrick's interview on the Today Show and during the segment he announced his new blog where he will give advice to others, his new job helping overweight teens and he pitched the Biggest Loser Diet Food Delivery Plan.

I realize that he is just grabbing hold of the opportunities being offered to him, however, his success came at a pretty high price tag. If every obese person in the USA was offered a $250k prize, a team of fitness and nutrition specialists, and millions of supporters, I think they would most likely find success as well.

Patrick seems like a great guy, but does his success on The Biggest Loser really qualify him to give dieting advice to others?

What do you think? Participate in the poll and comments below.

Top Food Trends of 2010

Thumbnail image for locavore.jpg

The dawning of another year often brings reflection on trends that arose in the year gone past, and also some speculation on what will be popular in the year to come.

This year is no different, with TIME Magazine recently revealing some of the highs and lows of the past 12 months.

So, what were the top 10 food trends in 2010, according to Time?

Well, they range from "Pop-Up Restaurants" to "The Culinary Hive Mind" to "Third-Wave Coffee," but here are 3 from their list, which I found particularly interesting:

1. Naturalism
I'm all for chefs using top quality, natural ingredients in their restaurants. But, when Michael Mina had ocean water flown in to a Las Vegas seafood restaurant to poach his fish in, I think that was taking "naturalism" to extremes.

2. Locavores
The days of not caring where our food came from seems to be in the distant past, as buying locally rose in popularity in 2010. This is definitely one trend I am 100% behind. Not only because local food is likely to be fresher, but I also like the idea of giving back to the local economy.

3. Fast-Food Monsters
2010 has been the year of some hugely unhealthy fast-food creations, from a bacon and cheese sandwich made with two fried chicken breasts, to a 2,530-calorie "pizza burger" monstrosity. The year past certainly seemed to be worse than anything we've previously seen in this area.

So, what are your top food and health trends for 2010? And, do you have any predictions for 2011?

Poll: Holiday Dieting Pitfalls

holiday-diet-pitfalls.jpg
Whether you are trying to lose weight or just trying to maintain a healthy diet, the holidays can be challenging for the best of us.

In fact, diet and fitness related websites see a sizable drop in traffic this time of year as some people adopt an "out of sight, out of mind" philosophy in regards to diet and exercise.

My biggest challenge is maintaining my fitness routine during the holiday season as travel and social events make gym time difficult. Maybe taking a month off isn't so bad as long as I can get back on the wagon during the first of the year.

What are your worst holiday dieting pitfalls? Participate in the poll and comments below.

What is your biggest diet and fitness nemesis this holiday season?
